What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins (also called telangiectasias) are clusters of tiny blood vessels that develop close to the surface of the skin. They are often red, blue, or purple; and they have the appearance of a spider web. They are commonly found on the face and legs.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins occur when blood pools in veins near the surface of the skin. They can be caused by heredity, obesity, trauma, and fluctuations in hormone levels, menopause and birth control pills. In many cases, the exact cause is not known. They tend to become more numerous with age, and are common among people over 30 and in pregnant women. If you have a job or lifestyle that entails standing for long hours may contribute or exacerbate the spider veins.

What Are Symptoms Of Spider Veins?
