Sebaceous Cysts are closed sacs that can be found under the skin of the entire body (except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet). A foul odor may be noticed from the overlying skin.
Sebaceous cysts may be caused by blocked glands in the skin. Cysts sometimes are inherited.
Sebaceous cysts tend to become infected giving rise to acute painful condition and abscess formation.
Conservative treatment: In early infection stage antibiotics are helpful, however when abscess forms, the cyst needs to be drained surgically.
Surgical treatment: Best results are obtained when the cyst is removed in its dormant stage. Under a field block anesthesia, the cyst is completely removed surgically along with its sac. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures to give the best cosmetic results. The specimen is sent for histopathological examination .
