Ingrown Toe Nail: Is a painful condition of the toe. It occurs when a sharp corner or edge of the toenail digs into the skin at the end of or side of the toe. Pain and inflammation occurs at the spot where the nail curls into the skin. Infection sets in with drainage of yellowish fluid called pus.
Conservative treatment: It does not help much since the main cause of this condition is nail invading the normal tissues which must be removed surgically.
Surgical treatment: Under all aseptic precautions, local anesthesia is used at the base of affected toe to numb the digit. The nail which has invaded the normal tissues is carefully lifted up and surgically removed. In recurrent in-growing nails sometimes we have to destroy the nail matrix from which the nail growth happens.
Ointment ,dressing and pain killers are given for 3-4 days. There is no cosmetic concern when only part of the nail is removed.
